Today we ventured into the heart of downtown Lake Charles to a joint still a little wet behind the ears, MacFarlane’s Celtic Pub is located at 417 Ann St, in part of The Brick House building.
It’s home to over 140 different beers, both draft and bottle from all over the world. It is also home of Celtic Nations Festival in the fall and coming in September they will be hosting Beerfest at the Lake Charles Civic center! As far as I know this is the largestbeer selection in Lake Charles, and they carry my personal favorite Rolling Rock which I have not been able to find at any bar or restaurant since Darrell’s stopped serving it. I had several. My wife also had a few Pete’s Strawberry Blonde’s. As the name implies it’s fruity and light (girl beer) and she was a fan. I apologize for my lack of adventure in the beer department but Rolling Rock is about as wild as I get.
Daniel was our server and he was awesome. The atmosphere in this place is unbelievable. It’s very authentic and the waitstaff even wears kilts. On Tuesday nights there is a trivia game hosted by local radio personality Gary Shannon. Gary is lively and funny and the trivia was a really good time.
We ordered an appetizer of “Blarney Stones” which are jalapeno peppers stuffed with sausage and wrapped in bacon. They are served with a spicy mayonnaise based sauce for dipping. Two thumbs way way up on this appetizer. It was my absolute favorite part of the meal. I ordered a grilled shrimp poboy which according to Daniel, is fairly new to the menu. The sandwich is piled up with fresh grilled shrimp, lettuce, and tomato and a seafood sauce on a wheat french bread. You have your choice of any side, but since I was enjoying the Rolling Rock so, I wanted to eat light and went with a side salad with blue cheese. The sandwich and salad were both amazing.
My wife had a grilled shrimp salad which is a large serving of grilled shrimp tails on a bed of spinach and spring lettuce mix, cucumbers, cherry tomatoes, and parmesan cheese. The dressing was a raspberry vinaigrette, and was a little thick for her taste but still complemented the salad well. They have several exceptional dessert options, but we were too busy enjoying trivia and steeling Gary Shannon’s beer to experience any of them today.
Service – A+, Atmoshpere – A++++, Food – A+.
Our total ticket was $47 before tip, and we had several drinks so still quite reasonable. We can’t say enough good things about this place. This Hungry Guy and Chick give MacFarlane’s Celtic Pub 2 enthusiastic forks up!!------------------------------
